Whether you're stepping on the mat for the first time or enrolling your child in their first martial arts class, this guide will help you feel confident, informed, and ready to begin your journey at Combate Academy.
Q: Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ?
A: Not at all! BJJ is designed to help you get in shape. We welcome all fitness levels and work with you at your pace.
Q: What should I wear to my first class?
A: A comfortable t-shirt and athletic shorts or leggings are fine if you don’t have a gi yet. We have loaner uniforms and gear available.
Q: Is BJJ safe for kids?
A: Yes. Our youth program is structured, supervised, and age-appropriate, with a focus on safety, discipline, and confidence.
Q: Do you offer a free trial class?
A: Absolutely! Your first class is free with no obligation. Come try it out and see if BJJ is for you.
Q: How often should I train?
A: For beginners, we recommend 2–3 times per week. Consistency over time is more important than frequency when starting.
Q: What’s the difference between gi and no-gi?
A: Gi training involves a traditional kimono, allowing grip-based techniques. No-gi uses rash guards and shorts and focuses on speed and control without clothing grips.
Q: Do I have to compete in tournaments?
A: Not at all. Competing is completely optional. Many students train just for fitness, fun, and self-defense.
Q: How do belt promotions work?
A: Promotions are based on time on the mat, technical knowledge, performance, and consistency. Kids and adults are evaluated differently with clear goals for each rank.
Q: What age can kids start BJJ at Combate Academy?
A: We accept children starting at age 5. Our classes are grouped by age and skill level for the best learning experience.
Q: What if I have previous injuries or health concerns?
A: Let your instructor know beforehand. We can modify drills or offer alternatives to ensure you train safely.
Q: Do I need to sign a long-term contract?
A: No. We offer flexible membership options, including month-to-month plans with no long-term commitments.
Q: Can parents watch kids' classes?
A: Yes! We encourage parental involvement and provide seating where you can observe every class. However, we kindly ask that parents do not coach from the sidelines—our instructors are trained to guide your child safely and effectively. Your support is best shown through encouragement and trust in the coaching staff.
Q: Is there a women’s-only class?
A: We offer co-ed classes, and while we don’t currently have a women’s-only program, many women train with us regularly in a welcoming and respectful environment. A good Jiu-Jitsu gym should reflect that—when women feel comfortable and supported, it’s a strong sign of a healthy, inclusive culture. At Combate Academy, we’re proud of the positive space we’ve built for everyone.
Q: What should I bring to class?
A: A clean uniform, water bottle, sandals for off-mat use, and a positive attitude. Optional: mouthguard and towel.
Q: How do I clean my gi and rash guard?
A: Wash in cold water after every use and hang to dry. Avoid fabric softeners and hot dryers to preserve the fabric.
Q: What if I feel nervous or intimidated before my first class?
A: That’s totally normal—and we’ve all been there! Our instructors and members are welcoming and supportive. You'll be guided every step of the way.
Q: Will I be sparring on my first day?
A: No. Beginners are never thrown into live sparring without a proper introduction. You'll start with basic drills and movement patterns first.
Q: How do I prevent injuries during training?
A: Always warm up properly, communicate with your partners, and tap early when caught in a submission. Our instructors prioritize safety and technique over ego.
Q: Do you have beginner-only classes?
A: Yes. We offer fundamentals classes tailored to beginners so you can learn the basics in a low-pressure environment.
Q: What if I can’t make it to class regularly?
A: Life happens! Just train when you can—progress is still possible. We also offer flexible schedules with morning, evening, and weekend classes.
Q: What’s the mat etiquette I should know?
A: Respect your instructors, training partners, and the academy. Always bow when entering or leaving the mat, wear shoes off the mat only, and keep your uniform clean.
Q: Can I still train if I’m older?
A: Absolutely! Many of our students start in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Jiu-Jitsu is for all ages, and training can be adapted to your pace and goals.
Q: Are there any hygiene rules I should follow?
A: Yes—keep nails trimmed, wash your gi and rash guard after every class, and don’t train if you're sick or have any contagious skin conditions. Cleanliness is non-negotiable.
Q: Do you have parking or locker rooms?
A: Yes, we have convenient parking on-site and clean changing rooms available for all members.
Q: What makes Combate Academy different from other gyms?
A: Our community. We focus on technical instruction, a clean and safe environment, and a supportive culture that welcomes everyone—from hobbyists to serious competitors.
